Since ancient times, Christians have understood Christ to fulfill three primary offices (or roles) in His work on our behalf: Prophet, Priest, and King. Through prophets, priests, and kings under the Old Covenant, God preserved and did good to His covenant people, yet all of them under the Old Covenant church failed to provide the salvation God’s people needed largely because of their own sinfulness.

Thus Christ came to fulfill and succeed where every one of God’s Old Covenant servants failed. In this season of the year when it is customary to remember Christ’s incarnation for us, we will look particularly at His three roles as our redeemer.
